Hillary's Book Club #6

My book reviews on my blog have only been fiction, up to this point. And i mainly read fiction. It has to be something pretty worth it for me, and to keep me interested. And boy did i find it.

Surviving a Shark Attack (On Land)

Born out of her own highly public encounter with betrayal and its emotional aftermath, Surviving a Shark Attack (On Land): Overcoming Betrayal and Dealing with Revenge is one of Dr. Laura Schlessinger's most personal books. Every single human being on the face of the earth has been betrayed, backstabbed, undermined, screwed over, or had their reputation attacked at least once in their lives," Dr. Laura writes. "It's a horrible experience, leaving you stunned, seared, sad, and very, very angry." When subject to a stealth land shark attack, the first reaction is shock and disbelief. When attempts to shut down the betrayal fail, the typical next response is to strike back. Often, that action only makes things worse. So, what is the source of betrayal and how do you survive it? How do you keep other peoples destructiveness from destroying you?

  •  Why some people are good and some are bad
  •  The motives that drive people to betray their friends and colleagues, including possessiveness, entitlement, competition, defensiveness, greed, jealousy, unhappiness, expedience-and just plain evil
  •  How to know whether you've truly been betrayed, or whether you are at fault for letting it happen
  •  The difference between daydreaming about vengeance (good) and actually seeking revenge (not so good)
  • Adopting a philosophical approach to revenge
  • When to forgive and forget (if ever)
  • Getting on with your life after you've been betrayed
As she puts it everyone has been hurt by someone in their lives, so what? It’s now in your hands to how to deal with it. To pick you off and walk away, forgive, and maybe do a self evaluation on how i got here in the 1st place. To embrace the people who love and support us and not take them for granted nor neglects them because we are hurting. We all have the control to choose our own emotions and how we react to others. What we cannot control is others. Once i figured that out my life became clearer on what mattered and what didn't. Because to let go of the past and who has hurt you really does lighten your emotion load. Life is too short and you are the only one who feels the weight of holding on. Even if you haven't gone through a betrayal recently i do recommend this book. It makes so much sense to have these tools.

Another reason I loved this book was about every 6th page she has a quote of someone about enemies, betrayal, forgiveness, or truth. I am a sucker for a good quote, as i am sure you have read on this blog over and over (I am sorry). So I will finish this with my favorite quote in the book.

"Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet sweaty things."

every woman should know...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE....
A set of screwdrivers,
a cordless drill, and
a black lace bra..

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE...
One friend who
Always makes her Laugh...
And one
Who lets her cry...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE...
A good piece of furniture
not previously owned by
Anyone else in her family...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE
Eight matching plates,
Wine glasses with stems,
And a recipe for a meal that will
Make her guests feel honored.

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE...
A feeling of control over
Her destiny...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
How to fall in love
Without losing herself...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
How to quit a Job
Break up with a lover
and confront a friend without ruining the friendship

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
When to try harder... and
WHEN TO WALK AWAY.

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
That she can't change
The length of her calves,
The width of her hips, or
The nature of her parents...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
That her childhood
May not have been
Perfect..but;
Its over...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
What she would and
Wouldn't
Do for love or more...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
How to live alone...
even if
She doesn't like it...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
Whom she can trust,
Whom she can't,
And why she shouldn't
Take it personally...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
Where to go...
Be it to her best friend's kitchen table..
Or a charming inn in the woods...
When her soul needs soothing... !

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
What she can and can't accomplish
In a day...
A month..
And a year...

Backin Up

my daddy taught me good!

Country Strong

I saw this movie with my mom a couple weeks ago and I can't get it out of my head. It is one of my favorite movies of all time. The 2 soundtracks form the movie (yep thats right they had so much music they needed 2 albums) are amazing. I think they are the soundtracks of my life.

Soon after a rising young singer-songwriter (Garrett Hedlund) gets involved with a fallen, emotionally unstable country star (Gwyneth Paltrow), the pair embarks on a career resurrection tour helmed by her husband/manager (Tim McGraw) and featuring a beauty-queen-turned-singer (Leighton Meester). Between concerts, romantic entanglements and old demons threaten to derail them all. The movie begins with Beau, an orderly, singing with Kelly, who is recovering in the rehabilitation facility he works at. Soon after the story unravels secrets and past problems. This movie could have been a typical stereo type of country music and all the crazy shenanigans with drinking and singing and the south. But it didn't. And the starts in it who are not normally singers, wow. They can all sing and well. I love this movie. I laughed, i cried, and i sang along.

"They say you get stronger in the broken places,
when you lean into the crisis that your facing.
In your weakness your made strong."

"You’re gonna take my hand
Whisper the sweetest words
And if you’re ever sad
I’ll make you laugh
I’ll chase the hurt"

"Cause I'm country strong
Hard to break
Like the ground I grew up on
You may fool me
And I'll fall
But I won’t stay down long
Cause I’m country strong"
